Breaking the News: Max Jacob’s Le Cornet à dés (1917)

The recurring pastiches of journalistic writing in Max Jacob’s seminal collection are more complex than they initially appear—critical, not merely this discourse’s supposed objectivity, but the assumption that transmission valid, valuable news is ever really sought first place. indiscretions sensationalist, and even fallacious items appear far less surprising when we acknowledge, along with Jacob, esthetic pleasure orienting poetic expression – which dependent, precisely, on a certain distortion truthful communication what public expects from its sources as well, if unconsciously. By identifying texts reference topics discursive tropes Belle Époque journalism (and often indistinguishable sibling, le roman feuilleton), find poet simultaneously draws “attractive force” such writing, drawing his reader into intrigue, while continually disrupting any stable referential function, through linguistic play. While Jacob hardly an engaged artist, by laying bare ultimately unsatisfying quick fix headline news, reconstituting latter objet d’art, he reminds us important truth after all: most rewarding experiences at once transparent fiction acknowledged resistant to understanding.
